Old Regime Leaders

Four former Iraqi Premiers are among 108 civilians and army officers to be tried by a special high military court. No date for the trial has been given nor have charges been announced but it is understood the majority could be charged under a new conspiracy and corruption law published today. This law provides for a maximum life sentence for conspiracy. The four former Prime Ministers who are among 78 civilians to be tried are Messrs Tewflk Suweidi, Ahmed Muktar Baban. Abdul Nahab Mirjani and Fadel el Jamali.

Mr Jamali was Foreign Minister in the last Government and was formerly'’* Iraq's representative at the United Nations. The list also includes 18 former Cabinet Ministers, including Mr Khulusy Khreiry, a Jordanian, who was Deputy Foreign Minister in the Arab Union and who is still in' hospital Recovering from injuries he received on July 14 when the old regime was overthrown.

The 30 Army officers to be tried by the special court include the former Chief of Staff, Major-Gen-eral Rafiq Araf.
