Arctic Flight By Blimp

(Rec. 8 p.m.) - WASHINGTON, August 9.

A North Pole-bound orange and silver United States Navy blimp landed yesterday at Resolute Bay on Cornwallis Island, within the Arctic Circle, further north than a non-rigid airship ever has been before.

Nearly all the 250 inhabitants of the isolated Canadian island turned to greet the research blimp when it nosed out of lowhanging clouds. Pushed along by a 10-mile-an hour tail wind, the blimp covered the latest 1000-mile hop of its trip to the North Pole in 22 hours. Next stop for the blimp is T-3, a floating island manned by International Geophysical Year scientists less than 500 miles from the Pole. The blimp trip is designed to test the usefulness of the lighter than-air ships for Polar supply and observation work.
