STATE WAGES CLAIM

Protests In Auckland (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 10. Auckland representatives of six Government employees’ organisations met today to discuss wage claims. The meeting was called by railway employees and comprised the Railway Tradesmen’s Association, the Public Service Association, the Post and Telegraph Employees’ Association, the New Zealand Workers’ Union, the Engine Drivers’ Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association and the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. The press was not admitted to the meeting, but a statement was issued later. It said that the meeting strongly condemned the attitude of the Government in refusing to promote normal conciliation proceedings after the agreed ruling rates survey within Government employees’ organisations.

The statement spid that the Government’s extraordinary attitude violated the principles, intentions and moral obligations to adjust the wage level of State employees from the 1956 level to that of 1958 and thus establish parity with the ruling rates in industry.
