Detective's Successful Chase Through Sydenham Streets

Prowess as a track sprinter and quarter-mile runner assisted a detective in a sensational street chase and successful catch at the height of late shopping activity in Sydenham on Friday evening. Hundreds of shoppers thronging the footpaths stood to one side as Detective A. Lynskey. a track athlete and footballer, sprinted for nearly half a mile after a young man who ran away from detectives who were interviewing him about an incident in a department store in Sydenham about 8 p.m. After the man had offered a cheque in the shop, the manager called the police. A squad car arrived and during an interview the mail made off. Detectives Lynskey and R. Bridge gave

chase. The race continued through main shopping areas, round -blocks of buildings and included some complicated dodging manoeuvres around parked cars before Detective Lynskey caught the man. The man proved a good runner and he had to run what he considered a “fairly well-judged race” to overtake him, said Detective Lynskey.

Malaya’s Independence.—Quiet, informal celebrations will mark the first anniversary of Malayan independence from August 29 to September 1. Plans for more elaborate festivities were abandoned because of the financial situation.—Kuala Lumpur, August 9. V
