Hawke’s Bay Steeples To French Echo

(New Zealand Press Association)

HASTINGS, June 22. Installed joint favourites in the Hawkes Bay Sieeplecnase, the leaiuie event of the hist day of tne Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting, Hit Parade and Revolution failed to produce the keen dual anticipated. The event went to French Echo after a sterling tussle throughout with Keahmar. The pair finished a furlong ahead of the field. The Whakatu Hurdles had a thrilling finish with four horses almost in line. Someries won narrowly from Cahn Tide. The opening event, the Kennels Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, produced a number of spills with the climax coming at the last hurdles when the two leaders, Tsehiffjey and Battle Fort, both fell when well clear of the field. Hamiltonian eventually ran on to win a furlong ahead of the rest.

The off-course double was won by Naughty and Privy Council. The combination paid £335 15s for £l. The totalisator handled £59,715, compared with £59,155 10s for the same day last year, an increase of £559 10s. There was a good attendance and the weather was fine but cloudy.
