PEDRO’S PRIDE SUCCESSFUL
Roiscl Steeples At Caulfield (N.Z/ Press Association—Copyriaht) MELBOURNE, June 22. Pedro’s Pride stamped herself- as one of the greatest cross-country mares seen in Australia when she carried 12st 91b to victory in the two-mile Roisel Steeplechase .at Caulfield yesterday, and rose' to favourite for the Grand National Steeples, to be run on July 12 at Flemington. Pedro's Pride, ridden by the outstanding cross-country jockey, Brian Smith, was “on the bit” all the way in the Roisel Steeples, and drew away after the last fence to win by three lengths and a half. Making her first appearance after a spell, Pedro’s Pride opened at 6 to 1, and was backed down to start at 3 to 1 equal favourite. Bookmakers,. remembering her great win in last year’s Grand National Steeples, are taking no chances with the mare's price for this year’s premier Australian crosscountry race, in which Pedro’s Pride is weighted at 12st 71b. In yesterday’s race, Pedro’s Pride beat several horses which will contest the Grand National. Roudbourne (7 to 1) was second, with Ball Nib (9 to 1), a length away, third.
The former New Zealand jockey, Garry Dulieu, gave Ball Nib every chance in the race, but the first two place getters had too much pace.
