The Hawera-owned and trained Arawana, a winner over hurdles at his two previous starts, upset the favoured division when he won the main flat event, the Mcßae Handicap on the first day of the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. Arawana was given the run of the race by the Hawera jockey, G. W. Lawson, and after being third to the straight he got up to beat Shirley Downs in the last stride.
