Easy Win For First Degree (New Zealand Press Association) HAWERA, June 22. The Hawera-owned and trained Arawana, a winner over hurdles at his two previous starts, upset the favoured division when he won the main flat event, the Mcßae Handicap on the first day of the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. Arawana was given the run of the race by the Hawera jockey, G. W. Lawson, and after being third to the straight he got up to beat Shirley Downs in the last stride. The second leg of the double was won by the WanganuPowned and trained Juventas. The double dividend was £272 18s for £l. The totalisator on-course handled £38,594, compared with £41,107 on the first day last year. The weather was fine and warm and the track fast. There was a good attendance.
