Theatre Manners

Sir,—-At a recent piano recital by Miss Eileen Joyce I was astounded by the positive rudeness of many of the theatre public. A surprisingly large proportion arriving late, delayed the start of the programme by some 10 minutes. Several had the audacity to seek admittance while the artist was playing. One final observation. Throughout, her playing was punctuated by intermittent coughs and splutters. However, many favourable impressions overseas artists gain from New Zealand and its enthusiasm for culture, these must surely be marred by the public’s apparent lack of etiquette. —Yours, etc., G. TARRANT.
