Medical Benefits
Sir,—Recent trends in medical services indicate that country people are how at a considerable disadvantage. In addition to the city charges of 7s 6d for consultation for the house, we are to be charged 2s 6d a mile from the nearest surgery. This, we have been told, is to cover many years in arrears of increased costs and professional time. Heaven help the person requiring medical attention in the back country. In 1956-57, out of a total social security medical benefit of £18,762.659, only £222,024 was paid to the medical practitioners in mileage fees. When will the Government take a realistic view of this situation, and remove the necessity for paying twice for our medical services?—Yours, etc., G. MIDDLEWOOD, Kirwee. A. A. McKAY, Annat. April 16. 1958. (This letter was referred to the Minister of Social Security (Miss Howard) but no reply has been received.]
