Road Safety
Sir—l note that a farther petrol tax is advocated. Could not some of this revenue or* other income from general motor taxation be put towards- the establishment of permanent driving training schools in the four, main centres? Private driving scnools could give pupils basic instruction off the public roads in safety; then qualified transport officers could train pupils for advanced licences once hie proposed provisional stage had been passed. This could also apply to motorcyclists. If the areas were laid out in circuit form with the cooperation of- motor-cycle and car clubs, they could also be used for competitive driving tests and races, some of the revenue from these meetings being used to help maintain the establishments. Would the Minister comment on these ideas?—Yours etc., A. F. MOFFATT. Ealing, April 21, 1958. (This letter was referred to the Minister of Transport (Mr Mathison) but no reply has been received.]
