Postponement of TRAINING
Appeals Granted By Committee A youth’s compulsory military training was postponed yesterday until June 30 so he can plant tomatoes. He is L. E. Campion an apprentice carpenter. Campion appealed for himself at a meeting of the Military Training Postponements Committee. He said he planted tomatoes every year as a sideline. He was prepared to go into camp last January, but he was not called. The ■ committee comprised Messrs A. E. Cavell (chairman) J. H. Ward, R. H. Webb, and N. H. Rawson (Crown representative). Mr E. O. Edwards was secretary. C. V. G. Hugo, an apprentice plasterer, was granted a postponement until June 30 on the grounds that his mother would need his help because his father died recently. Mrs Hugo and Hugo’s employer appeared on his behalf. Mr F. Rhodes, who appeared for behalf of G. J. Pigeon, a driver excavator, said that Pigeon was engaged on a contract for the Christchurch Gas Company and the mains had to be laid before winter. It would be very difficult to get somebody to take Pigeon’s place. Postponement was granted until June 30. G. J. W. Beere, a farmhand, wanted by his employer, Mr A. H. Black, to cut flown trees and fence a property, was granted postponement until June 30. It was said he was available for the last January intake, but was not called up. Postponement until June 30 was also granted to B. L. Clegg, a warehouseman. The managing director of Clegg’s firm said that Clegg was prepared to go to camp last January; but he was not called. Other postponements were granted to J. F. Harper, an apprentice carpenter (June 30); E. D. Walker, a clerk (June 30). and F. McCormick, a plasterer (June 30).
