INVESTIGATION ON SHIP
Sailors Attempt To Escape
(N Z Press Association—Coni/rioh: PLYMOUTH, March 30. Two ratings tried to escape today from the 2650-ton minelayer Apollo, where an investigation into alleged mutinous behaviour ended last night. They walked from the ship wearing badges of another vessel and ran off when challenged after leaving the dockyard gates, but were later caught. The Apollo—reputed to be the fastest ship in the Royal Navysailed from Plymouth tonight to resume trials after a refit. Alleged incidents on board the minelayer have lea to eight seamen being detained and 34 placed under open arrest. The Admiralty announced in London tonight that, as a result of the Apollo inquiry, two men were to be tried by court-martial. Other ratings involved were being dealt with summarily by their commanding officer. The men for court-martial are Leading Seaman Sturton and Able Seaman McCarthy. Charges against Sturton will include returning from leave drunk, impeding a petty officer in the execution of his duty, and behaviour with contempt. Those against McCarthy will include inciting a rating violently to resist arrest, impeding a petty officer in the execution of his duty, and creating disturbance.
