SHEEP SENT TO ISRAEL

Sydney Man’s Scheme (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. March 31. More than 1500 “Australians” migrated to Israel today. They included four wallabies, some young sheep dogs, two emus, two white cockatoos, and three galahs. The rest were sheep. They sailed in the Danish vessel, Thala Dan, from Pyrmont. Six Australian stockmen and one wool-classer sailed with them. Sheep dog pups which accompanied the sheep, will be trained to answer commands in Hebrew. The man behind the scheme is a Sydney specialist. Dr. S. Goldberg. It will cost him £lOO.OOO ' including the charter of the Thala Dan. 1 But, he said today, “It fulfils a burning desire to do something for Israel, the land of my fathers “The Israel sheep is descended from stock that lived there in Biblical times. Its wool will not spin and can be used only for carpet making. Its meat is poor, and its chief use is that the ewes' milk is used for cheese making.” Dr. Goldberg has a 1000-acre property in Israel, 10 miles from Gaza. He already has sent small numbers of pedigree sheep there for preliminary experiments. His main shipment today was Corriedales. Dorset Horns, and Border Leicesters.
