Merger Scheme Rejected

(Rec. 9 p.m.) CANBERRA, March 19

Australia's Federal Cabinet has rejected a proposal to merge its Defence Department and the three service departments into a single unit under the control of one Minister.

Announcing the decision in the House of Representatives today, the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) said larger forces, greater technical problems, large-scale munitions industry and a defence vote of £200,000.000 made it impossible to revert to the 1938 system of one Minister

The proposal was one of a number of recommendations made by an expert committee set up to review defence and service departments with a view to. increasing efficiency.
