New Repression Threatened

The South African Minister of Native Affairs, Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd, warned last night that the Government might take steps against the African National Congress under anti-Communist legislation as well as under native laws.
He told an election meeting thai Liberal members, criticising his recent move to ban the congress in native reserves, had said the congress would be driven underground and would turn to Russia. “If they do we shall not only deal with them under native legislation, but also under antiCommunist legislation” Dr. Verwoerd said. At another meeting in Mount Edgecoffibe, Zululand, Clive van Ryneveld, the South African cricket captain in the recent test series against Australia and a United Party candidate in the elections, last night attacked the Government’s apartheid policy. He said apartheid, territorial separation of Africans and Europeans into two states, had proved a failure during the last 10 years. In fact, the African population in cities had increased by more than 50 per cent. Industries reserved for Europeans had now become almost entirely African.
