Spreydon Wins Yaldhurst Shield; 12-Point Margin

Spreydon, the strongest of the 12 swimming clubs in Christchurch, won the Yaldhurst Shield in a convincing manner at an inter-club carnival at the St. Albans bath on Saturday afternoon. The shield, originally intended for inter-primary school swimming, is now awarded annually for under 14 years inter-club competition. Last year’s winner, Elmwood, gained second place this year, 12 points behind Spreydon. The small North Beach club performed surprisingly well to take third place in front of many of the larger clubs. The carnival amply demonstrated the wealth of young talent in Christchurch swimming. Some of the times were exceptional for children under 14, and the diving was of very good standard. Two competitors recorded 34.8 sec for the 50 yards for boys under 12. One was M. Hay (Elmwood); who won a heat, and the other was A. Quail (Elmwood), who won the final. In the same event for girls, a particularly fine swimmer who holds the Canterbury under 14 title, Sally Pitama, gained fastest time in the heats in 35.45ec. In the final she recorded 35sec when hard pushed by Miss W. Dale (Spreydon). Another swimmer in fine form on Saturday was Paul Tau, a strongly-built boy who is having his first season in inter-club swimming. His time of 66.1 sec for the 100 yards was excellent. Abbreviations used in the results are:— Beckenham, B; Christchurch, C; Elmwood.
