Lyttelton Harbour Swim

A 19 - year - old kindergarten teacher, Miss Elizabeth Jones, and a 15-year-old schoolboy, Seaton McLean, swam Lyttelton Harbour, from Diamond Harbour jetty to the Gladstone Pier, early on Saturday morning. McLean is a pupil of the Linwood High School.

Another boy, Grahame Jones, aged 14, swam to within 25 yards of Gladstone Pier, and was then overcome by the cold. He was taken aboard the accompanying motor dinghy

The three swimmers left the jetty at Diamond Harbour at 6.40 a.m. The tide was then nearing slack low water, and the sea was almost smooth. Light rain fell during the swim. The distance is a little more than a mile, and the Gladstone Pier was reached at 7.50 a.m., the time taken being Ihr lOmin.

Rubbish Fire.—A call *was received by the Christchurch Fire Brigade to 37 Celia street, Redcliffs, occupied by John Stanley, at 8.6 p.m. on Saturday. The cause, a rubbish fire, was soon put out without damage.
