Strike Threat In Argentina
NEW YORK, January 22. A wave of labour unrest swept Argentina today, a month before the Presidential election on February 23, the United Press reported from Buenos Aires. Electric power services, railways, banks, insurance companies and meat packing plants were threatened by strikes in support of demands for 15 per cent pay increases. . Light and power workers last night voted to hold a 24-hour stoppage of technical and administrative staffs. . Railwaymen and bank clerks planned to start a series of stoppages. Bakers, plumbers and gasfitters unions were also considering strikes. Building workers had been on strike since last week, said the agency. Some political quarters blamed the unrest on Labour chiefs who had been followers of the former dictator, Juan Peron. Some of these men were now active in the •o-called “62 unions”—a group trying to recover control of the Central Labour Organisation, the United Press said.
