India's leading player, Ramanathan Krishnan, won the men’s singles title in the All-India hard court lawn tennis championships at Madras today In an exciting final, he beat Ulf Schmidt, of Sweden. 2-6. 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, 8-6.

Petrol Lost.— When a tanker overturned near Maruia Springs on Thursday more than 1000 gallons of petrol were lost. Only about 500 gallons were saved out of a load of 1575 gallons. The 500 gallons were recovered when the tanker was righted. The petrol was transferred to another vehicle and sent on to Greymouth. The damaged tanker was towed to Christchurch.
