Sir, —One is not left in doubt as to the selfishness of the average citizen and his greedy, grasping, and winner-take-all attitude, after reading about the “pepper scramble.” How stupid can one get? One small tin of pepper, mustard, or spice lasts the average family twelve months. Selfish grabbers will have enough pepper to last years. These same people will write to newspapers and complain of shortages, caused by themselves. As it turns out, their stupid buying was unnecessary. Shortages are often caused this way, with all types of merchandise, where, in a lot of instances, had the public bought only enough for their present needs, there would be plenty for all. — Yours, etc., DON’T PANIC.
