Bertrand Russell

Sir, —Naturally, one wonders, as does your reviewer, the cause of Russell’s disbelief: “Why I am not a Christian.” Perhaps the answer lies in what Arthur Findlay suggests in his book ‘‘The Psychic Stream.” During the last half of the present century the various beliefs of peoples living before the time of Jesus has been investigated. No less than approximately 14 other saviour gods had similar beliefs surrounding their names as were later applied to Jesus. According to Findlay’s book each of them was regarded as a saviour, exactly in the same way as we today regard Jesus. Can any of your readers explain why as many as 14 saviours each in turn have almost identical beliefs concerning them? —Yours, etc., ANSWER PLEASE. January 4, 1958.
