Mr Dulles, the United States Secretary of State, said in a year-end message yesterday that there was “ample evidence of discontent” within the Chinese and Soviet world. “As 1957 draws to a close there is much for which we can be thankful,” he said in a statement issued by 'the State Department. “The free world has stayed united in the face of many threats and allurements. “Within the Chinese and Soviet world there is ample evidence of discontent and of a desire of the peoples for more .independence and the enjoyment of freedom. “Although there is no warrant for complacency, we can look forward to the New Year with confidence in ourselves and our allies, and in the course we are following together. “The future will not be without difficulties, but with faith in God and with the strength of free men we shall obtain our objectives—a just and enduring peace for mankind.”
