SYDNEY-HOBART YACHT RACE

Two Craft Collide With Sunfish (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 29. While most of the yachts in the Sydney-Hobart yacht race battled against heavy seas whipped up by gale-force winds the massive Victorian cutter, Kurrewa IV, forged further ahead of the field and is expected to break the race record. The latest radio report places the Kurrewa IV 30 tniles east of the southern tip of Flinders Island, which stands out in Bass Strait not far north of the Tasmanian mainland.

She is more than 30 miles ahead of the rest of the fleet, which is headed by Solo, Catriona and Metung. Two of the yachts—the race one signed in 1948, Italy .will extained damage to their hulls early yesterday when they collided with a huge sunfish 17 miles off Flinders Island while sailing close together. The Anitra’s rudder was badly damaged, but the yacht is reported to be continuing slowly. Seven other craft have been battered by high seas. Several have had sails blown out and ripped to shreds, and gear washed away.
