(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 27. Victoria failed to capitalise on the advantage it gained by getting New South Wales out for 143 when it was dismissed for 106 on the second day of the Sheffield Shield match today. The only Victorian to show any fight with the bat was the former test wicket-keeper, Len Maddocks, who made 47. Another highlight was a fine spell, of bowling by uie 19- year old New South Wales giant, Gordon Rorke, who took three wickets in one over and finished with three for nine. In the match at Adelaide, Queensland made a promising start towards catching South Australia’s first innings total of 406. At stumps, Queensland had lost only one wicket for 156. Scores were:— ‘ New South Wales, first innings, 143; second innings, one for 23. Victoria, first innings. 106 (Maddocks 47, Loxton 21; Rorke three for 9). South Australia, first innings. 406 (Dansie 148. Harris 63, Dooland 56. Pinch 49; Lindwall three for 59). Queensland, first innings, one for 156 (Reynolds 78 not out, McLaughlin 57 not out).
