FALSE RETURNS OF INCOME
Bootmaker Fined £775

Charles Harrison, a bootmaker, of Wanganui, was fined a total of £775 with costs amounting to £34 2s. when he pleaded guilty in the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court today to 11 charges of wilfully making false returns of income.
Mr F. J. Connell, who appeared for the Commissioner of Taxes, told Mr S. S. Preston. S.M., that during the 11 years ending March 31, 1957. there had been a tax deficiency of £4782 plus £928 in unpaid Social Security charges. The tax owing had now been paid. The bulk of discrepancies was related to an overstatement of expenditure. On the charges relating to the first two years the Magistrate fined Harrison £25 on each charge, for the next two years the fines were £5O. for the next three years £75. and for the last ifour years £lOO.
