Films of life among the Sherpa women were shown by Mrs N. D. Hardie at the final social for 1957 of the Christchurch Home Economics Association last evening. The president (Miss E. D. Killnet) welcomed the guests. Specially invited guests included Mrs W. Mackay and Miss R. A. Alston, of the National Council of Women, and Mesdames F. Pearce and E. M. Burrell, of the Women's Division of Federated Farmers. A programme of entertainment included items by the women’s choir and recitations and monologues by Miss F. M. Calvert. Floral decorations were of roses, lilies, and white bridal bells. There were about 90 present.
Members of the St. James’ branch of the Mothers’ Union entertained members of their country link, St. John’s branch of the Mothers’ Union (Leestpn) and members of city branches at a .Christmas party held at the St. James* Parish Hall, Riccarton. After a service in the church, conducted by the vicar (the Rev. F. L. Allen), the enrolling member (Mrs T. Dunn) welcomed visitors. Items were given by the following: Mr and Mrs James Wilson (vocal duet). Miss Kathleen Manguels (songs), Mrs Doris Pashby (humorous recitations). Mr Daniel Bishop (songs). Mesdames Rona Burrows and Hilda Reeve (piano duet). Miss Minor Cochin (monologues). Mrs Marjorie Wilson (songs), Messrs James Wilson and David Bishop (vocal duet). At supper Mrs F. L. Allen cut the Christmas cake.
Miss Suzanne Holman, only daughter of Vivien Leigh (Lady Olivier) and her first husband Leigh Holman, will be married in London next month to Mr Robin Farrington, a member of a Lloyd’s underwriting firm. There will be six bridesmaids and about 600 guests, including the bride’s stepfather, Sir Laurence Olivier, and his son by a previous marriage. Suzanne Holman spent three years at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, but was never really happy about the idea of becoming an actress.
Mother’s Union and Young Wives’ Fellowship members of the East Christchurch Rural Deanery met recently at a garden party as part of the centennial celebrations of St. John’s Church, Woolston. A service was conducted in the church by the Rev. H. F. Thomson, followed by a programme arranged by the Young Wives’ Fellowship. This included a pageant depicting in period costume and song each decade of the century.
The November meeting of the North Christchurch Garden Club took the form of an outing at Dean’s Bush, where a conducted tour was made.
Mrs Wrighton presided at the monthly meeting of the New Brighton Women’s Christian Temperance Union held at the home of Mrs Ellis. It was reported that mental hospital patients had been visited and a successful bring and buy sale was held for the mental hospital Christmas party.
