DEMAND FOR BAHRAIN

Persian Claim To Sovereignty

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) TEHERAN, November 14. Two Deputies of the Persian Parliament, the Majlis, in speeches today reiterated Persia’s claim to sovereignty over the island of Bahrain and urged th? Government to take steps to incorporate Bahrain —“an integral part of our territory”—with Persia. The deputies, Amidi Nouri and Arsaln Khalatbar, also called for a stronger navy to safeguard Persia’s rights in tne Persian Gulf. Arnidi Nouri said: “Britain as our Bagdad Pact ally should realise Persia’s aspirations and respect our rightful nationalist demands in order to ensure the Persian oil flow to the West.” On Tuesday the Shah of Persia instructed his Cabinet to present a Bill to Parliament, making Bahrain Island a province of Persia. Britain’s view of the claims, often expressed in the past, is that Bahrain State is bound to the British Government by treaties dating back to 1820. The British Charge d’Affaires (Mr John Russell) today calico on the Persian Foreign Minister (Dr. Ali Ardalan) and reiterated Britain’s stand on Bahrain.
