British Fondness For Pets

[From the London Correspondent of "The Press’’} LONDON, November 9. Cats and dogs have dropped in popularity in British households and the cage-bird population has overhauled them. There are some 6m cage-birds in British households today—l.o times as many as in 1947 —and their food bill is costing pet-lovers £15,600,000 a year. Last year there were 5,200.000 cats and 3.700.000 dogs kept as pets and it has been estimated that two out of every three households m the country have one or more birds cats or dogs. The manufacturer of food for cats and dogs supports a ‘ growing industry, with sales of prepared food amounting to some £lom a year. But the total cost to the householder for feeding these three classes of pets amounts to more than £som a year. The peak year for cats and dogs was 1952, when there were estimated to be some 5,900,000 cats and 4,000,000 dogs.
