PLYWOOD BLOWN OFF TRUCK
Interruption To Traffic
A strong north-westerly gust of wind blew 15 bundles of plywood off the deck of a truck at the corner of Barbadoes street and Moorhouse avenue shortly after 4 p.m. yesterday. The truck, owned by a city cartage firm, was carrying the plywood from the railway goods sheds, and had turned into Barbadoes street when the wind caught the load. Traffic in Barbadoes street had to be controlled by three traffic officers when some of the bundles of plywood sheets burst on hitting the road and scattered the sheets in all directions. The bundles were bound with steel straps, which broke on several of them.
Several of the bundles, which weighed a hundredweight, hit a parked car, but no serious damage was done to it.
A mobile crane was called to assist in the reloading of the plywood sheets on to the truck. A large crowd of schoolboys returning home from the Christchurch Technical College and Xavier College nearby gathered to watch these sheets and the unburst bundles hoisted back on to the* carrier's truck by the breakdown: vehicle. Traffic officers diverted traffic in Barbadoes through a narrow lane while this operation was carried out. It was more than an hour before the roadway was completely cleared.
