WOMENS INSTITUTES REVIEW THEIR WORK
When the North Canterbury Federation of Country Women’s Institutes meets at Ohoka today for its half-yearly council meeting, a comprehensive report of six months’ work will be reviewed. The formation of a new institute at Kainga is reported and congratulations are extended to five institutes which have celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversaries this year. They are Hawarden, The Peaks. Medbury. Parnassus and Sefton-Kowai Country Women’s Institutes. An officers’ day was held for the first time during the period under review. Presidents, secretaries and treasurers of all institutes in the federation were the guests of the executive and talks were given by the president (Mrs J. Clemetti and voluntary organisers. A school for voluntary organisers was held in Christchurch. Entries were submitted from the North Canterbury Federation in the programme banner competition, the Robert Young Rose Bow’l (patchwork quilts’), the Robert Young Cup <essays> and the Silver Tray sketch competition. Miss Ansford. of the Rangiora Country Women’s Institute. was placed third in the sketch competition. Festival at Waipara In the sketch and choir festival held in the Waipara Hall for two nights in September there wore 12 entries in the sketch se tion and four in the choral section. Results were:—Choir section: (Ransiora 1. Waipara-Omihi 2. Amberley and Kai-apoi 3. Sketches: Rangiora No. 2 team 1. Rangiora No. 1 team 2. Pines Beach and Kaiapoi No. 1 team 3 equal. Mrs E. M. Martin ‘Dunedin), who is Dominion president of the New Zealand Federation of Country Women's Institutes, visited the North Canterbury federation recently ’ at Scargill and told of her visit to the A.C.W.W. conference held in Ceylon this year. The federation’s housekeeping scheme is operating again with two permanent housekeepers and one temporary housekeeper. Some institutes have been s”polying [help under the Home Aid Scheme. President’s Programme The president of the federation (Mrs J. Clemett) has represented the organisation at many functions in town and country districts. The Hurunui East Co-ordinating Committee has now been split into two groups, the Cheviot and
Waipara-Scargill groups. Both the Hurunui East Co-ordinating Committee and the Hurunui West Co-ordinating Committee report an active period of work during the last six months. The North Canterbury District Co-ordinating Committee reports the holding of a series of classes in arts and crafts conducted by Miss Y. Rust, a tutor of the Adult Education Department. Canterbury University College. As a result. basketry circles were formed and three-day schools were held under the tutorship of Mrs M. Mauser. Sunnier. Group activities and news from ; 24 institutes within the federation are fully reviewed in the report. (
