CURRENT NOTES
Misses H. Melville, B. Wood, and D. Chapman, of the Christchurch Federated Business and Professional Women’s Club, will attend the conference of the New Zealand Federation of Business and Professional Clubs, which will be held at Palmerston North during the Labour Day week-end. Members and friends of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Founders’ Society (Inc.) held a social evening recently. The secretary (Mrs M. Jones) welcomed the guests. Items were given by the following: Mr Thompson (songs). Mrs Thompson (recitation), Mesdames McCracken and Y’andle (comic sketch), and Mr and Mrs Thompson (dialogue). The accompanist was Mrs Metcalfe. Supper' was provided by the women's committee.
A talk on Campbell Island illustrated by coloured slides was given by Mr lan Clark at a meeting of the Christchurch Cultural Society. Items were given by Miss Janice McCahon (pianoforte solos) and Mr Carl Smith (songs). The accompanist was Mrs W. E. Olds. Mr D. J. Hewitt, who presided, thanked the artists and speaker.
Mrs W. D. Bunt presided at a musical morning tea party arranged by Mrs Hilda Reeve at the Canterbury Women’s Club. Those taking part were Mesdames Hilda Reeve. Mabel Mason, Grade Harrall, Phyllis Hill -and Doreen Corrick.
Competitions were held at the last meeting of the West of England Women’s Association when prizes were won by Mesdames Rowberry, Stevens and Wright. Mrs G. Eastmond presided. The members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Teachers’ Association were addressed by Dr. Enid Cook at their meeting held recently. She spoke on “Factors contributing to the emotional health of the child, and how the kindergarten can assist the home in developing them.” The delegates to the association conference. held in Wellington, during the August holidays, gave an outline of the business.
The president (Mrs G. O. Nankivell) opened the 1957-58 season of the Dallington Women's Bowling Club before a good attendance of members and visitors. Other speakers were Mrs I. Small, president of the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre, and Mr H. N. Merrett, president of the men's section. Mrs R. A. Moore, vice-president, rolled the first jack and Mrs Small bowled the first bowl.
A 1 a function held at Mary-1 knoll. Mrs A. Aspell, president of the Sacred Heart Girls’ College Past Pupils’ Association, welcomed members and representatives from the following kindred associations: Villa Maria College. St. Mary's College. Bangi-ruru School, St. Margaret's College. Otago Girls’ High School, Southland Girls’ High School, Nelson Girls’ College, find the Dominican Convent. A oneact play, produced by Mrs D. McAuley. was performed, and Mrs K. Bradley and Miss L. Newman, who sang, were accompanied by Mrs V. Hobby. Mrs Leyden Baker, on behalf of the executive council of Old Girls’ Associations, thanked the hostesses.
Mrs O. B. Congreve welcomed visitors and members to the opening of the 1957-58 season of the United Women's Bowling Club. Guest speakers were Mrs Gundry representing the Christchurch Ladies’ Bowling Centre; Mr R. G. Grant, president of the United Men's Bowling Club; and Mr R. B. Clarke. representing the Christchurch Bowling Centre.
