Inquiries At Trentham
Stipendiary stewards reported the following inquiries at Trentham on Saturday:— , _ 4 In the Wainui Handicap. Balfast (V. R. Coley), when making a forward move, was blocked by horses in front. „ . _ In the Wellington Guineas, Equal Terms (J. W. Harris) had to be restrained behind Nephite, which was beginning to tire on the turn into the straight. This caused Attila (W. L. Aitken) to be checked. Switzerland (A. C. Messervy) was well bacK in the field after a furlong. This was not his usual form, and Messervy said that Switzerland was hampered soon after the start when he had insufficient room on the Inside of Searturn. William Paul ran wide down the straight, and his rider, C. T. Wilson, said that the horse had previously shown a tendency to hang out. E. J. Ellis, the trainer, was advised by the stewards to try a different bit. W.'R. Hooton. the rider of Passive in the Wellington Handicap, said that she was under pressure near the four furlongs, and was beaten soon after turning into the straight. V. R. Coley, rider of Hot Drop in the same race, was warned about shifting his ground soon after the start. Americus (W. D. Skelton), on the inside of Hot Drop, was checked here.
Skelton said that, he intended going for an opening, but that Americus did not have enough early pace.
G. O. Smith, the rider of Broadacre in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap, lost an iron on the turn into the straight. Smith’s gear was found to be in good order. Wondon (R. J. Skelton), in the middle of the Held, had a troubled run on the rails on the turn. Skelton said that Wondon has a high galloping action, and that he could not get the horse clear. In the Shorts Handicap. Barobar (W. J. Mudford), after being one of the leaders at the top of the straight, finished near the rear. Mudford said Barobar was fading and. mainly because of this, she was in trouble when the field became packed near the finish.
A check to Golden Luca (J. W. Harris) in the October Hack Handicap was found to be caused by Elrey (W. J. Broughton) running erratically. The committee recommended that Elrey’s trainer be told that Elrey in future be raced m gear which would help check the horse’s tendency to throw his head in the air. >
