REFEREE STOPS RUGBY GAME
Teams Involved In Fight
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 7.
A Taupo sub-union Rugby match was stopped by the referee 20 minutes before the end of the game yesterday when a fight developed among several members of both teams.
A number of spectators went on to the field and a member of the sub-union executive called the ponce.
The match was between Tongariro and College Old Boys. Tongariro was leading 3-0 when a College Old Boys player fell heavily during a scramble for the ball. A fight began between two players, and within seconds several others were involved.
By the time the police arrived, the referee, Mr J. Woodward, had ordered the teams to the dressing room and had calmed the crowd. His report will be considered by the executive of the sub-union at a meeting this week.
