TREATED PINE IN SEA

Experiment At New Plymouth “The Press" Special Service NEW PLYMOUTH, July 3. Radiata pine which has been under water below the new Moturoa wharf at New Plymouth for six months was inspected by experts and representatives of the timber trade yesterday. The timber was in lengths bolted to a hardwood board. Some lengths had been treated with a new timber preservative and a few were untreated. The untreated lengths were heavily attacked by marine creatures and were in a poor condition, They were all badly decayed and crumbly. The treated lengths did not appear to have deteriorated.

After the inspection the lengths were put back in the sea and will remain there for many years. Periodic tests will be made. Similar tests are being carried out at other New Zealand ports and in New South Wales, New Guinea and the United Kingdom.
