NEW PETROL TAX PROPOSAL

Businessmen To Investigate -

Should the proposed Auckland system of a local levy on petrol to finance local reading projects be accepted or rejected throughout New Zealand was the question put by Mr R. C. Neville to the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. Mr Neville said he would not speak for or against the proposal at present, but he considered it warranted a full investigation. If the scheme became possible, no doubt Christchurch would be involved. There were roading projects needing urgent attention—the northern road access and the Lyttelton road tunnel being two. Mr Neville estimated that if the scheme was applied to Canterbury £1,000,000 could be raised. However, it was a new conception of raising money and involved a principle. The council agreed that its transport committee should investigate the proposal.
