Chateau Outclasses Cup Field At Blenheim

(From Our Own Reporter)

BLENHEINE, Nlay 2. Chateau, which was having only her third start after a spell, outclassed her rivals in the Marlborough Cup, principal event and first leg of the double on the first day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s annual meeting today. A. C. Messervy had Mr G. R. Martin’s Panair mare in the trailing position behind the pacemaking Super Corn to the three furlongs, and moved her through smartly to lead into the straight, where she soon gained a winning margin of three lengths and a half on another North Island candidate, Benefactor. Saunter finished better than Scuppered for third tnree lengths back, and was followed by Goldwyn. The Orari-trained Appreciate, ridden by the leading jockey, W. D. Skelton, ran clear from the trailing position early in the run home in the E. A. Weld Memorial Handicap, the second leg of the double, and was not extended to beat the North Island gallopers, Kiatoa and Vita Glow. Fulgent did best of the Riccarton horses to finish fourth, but was four lengths back, narrowly beating Greenwood. Chateau carried 13,950 i 10s tickets in a total double pool of 47,500 ss, the holders of 1241 5s tickets reinvested on Appreciate received a double dividend of £126 13s for £l. The meeting was held in perfect weather before a good attendance. The track, which was dead, early improved as the day progressed. On-course investments amounted to £18,990, including £2045 on the double, compared with £17,473 10s last year, an increase of £1516 10s. Cup Running Shoal drifted to the rear with Kiaree Beau and Scuppered at the start of the Marlborough Cup. Super Corn quickly took over the pacemaking alongside Peter Bruce, with Benefactor next a length and a half clear of Saunter and King’s Crest, which were two lengths in front of Kiaree Beau and Scuppered, with Shoal ten lengths back at the rear. Super Corn still held his lead at the six furlongs, but racing to the half-mile Chateau had reduced his margin to a length and a half, with a similar distance to Benefactor and Goldwyn, the tiring Peter Bruce dropping back next on the outside of Saunter and Scuppered. King’s Crest was five lengths further back, ahead of Kiaree Beau, with Shoal making very little impression. Super Corn started to shorten stride approaching the straight, where Chateau went through to the lead. Benefactor ranged up on the outside of Super Corn soon after the field straightened up and set out after Chateau, but found the task of overhauling the Carterton-trained mare beyond him. Saunter finished well to beat Scuppered by half a length for third, three lengths behind Benefactor. Goldwyn was two lengths back fifth, and was followed in by the weakening Super Corn, which was well clear of King’s Crest and Kiaree Beau, with Shoal and Peter Bruce at the rear. The Second Leg The favourite, Vita Glow, attempted to lead throughout the E. A. Weld Memorial Handicap, the second leg of the double, but had nothing left in reserve to cope with Appreciate’s strong challenge about a furlong and a half from the finish. Appreciate which had trailed to the straight, won comfortably by a length and a half from the topweight, Kiatoa, which wore down Vita Glow near the post to take second place by a head. Fulgent, which had been about fourth throughout, held that position four lengths back, just ahead of Greenwood. Assembly, which was well back until the half-mile, improved slightly in the straight for a fair sixth, and was followed in at intervals by Teko, which drifted from a handy position before the staright, and Beau Ray, which did not improve after a slow beginning. Jesse James was last away and trailed the field throughout. Results: —
