RICCARTON WORK

Rise And Shine Goes Weh Motueka, Rise and Shine, and Merrimayes showed their fitness for the Ashburton County Handicap in fast sprints on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday. Conditions were good for training, and a firmer track suited Rise and Shine in particular. She has a good record at Ashburton, the scene of her first success, and her form should stiffen if the weather remains fine. Motueka (B. Parsons) started from the six furlongs two lengths behind Adversary (N. Hoy), but gained a length going to the half-mile, and kept up a strong run on the outside to win by a neck in Imin 16 4-ssec. Motueka ran the last half-mile strongly In 50 4-ssec. It was a firstclass trial. Rise and Shine (C. T. Wilson) led Merrimayes (A. H. Eastwood) by a neck finishing seven furlongs in Imin 30 4-ssec, the last four in 51sec. Nasib (A. H. Eastwood) led Leprechaun (E. G. Low) by a length and a half ending seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec, the last four strongly in 50 4-ssec. Teaka (N. Hoy) was to have taken part in this trial, but he was left behind when he shied and struck the running rail. He sprinted half a mile in 53 3-ssec. i The stablemates Walkova (B. Parsons) and Golden Demonic (R. P. Register) ran the last half-mile of their task in 54 3-ssec, finishing on terms. Walkova’s saddle worked forward during the trial. He is a fit horse, and a form horse, for the hurdles at Ashburton. Racing Well Tamarisk (R. W. Gould) recorded Imin 34 l-ssec for seven furlongs and 53sec for the last half-mile. He has been racing consistently, and looks a place prospect for the Chatmos Hack Handicap at Ashburton. Gay Romeo (C. T. Wilson) was easing up inside the last furlong and took Imin 24 4-ssec for six furlongs. Haughty Chief (R. W. Gould) worked up speed from the halfmile, sprinting home attractively in 51sec. Winning Treasure (B. Taggart) led her stablemate Equipage (C. T. Wilson) by half a length ending half a mile in 52 4-ssec. Winning Treasure, a candidate for the Rakaia Hack Handicap at Ashburton, was fourth in a stronger field at Riccarton last Saturday. Neptune’s Pride (E. G. Low) beat Lucky Time (W. Beck) over seven furlongs by a length in Imin 36 2-5 sec, the last half-mile taking 53 3-5 sec. Belletavia (R. McDonald) and May Whistle (J. L. Coulter) recorded 52 4-ssec for half a mile, run on terms. Skyrider (B. Parsons) held a short lead from Beau Chat (R. W. Gould) finishing half a mile in 53 2-ssec. Skyrider, a creditable third at Riccarton last Saturday, is a form horse for the Lagmhor Stakes No. 2 at Ashburton.

Solstice (R. Hobson) was not tested for speed in the straight after starting from the seven furlongs. He i ecorded Imin 39 2-ssec for the distance after running the first three furlongs in 43 2-ssec. Sweet Christine (E. G. Low) was running on strongly ending six furlongs. She recorded 53 l-ssec for the last four.

Desperado (R. Hobson) led Asunder (T. Wilson) by half a length ending six furlongs in Imin 22 4-ssec. They slackened speed inside the last furlong after recording 27 2-ssec for the opening two furlongs.

Calcutta Sweep (W. Beck) was given a run over six furlongs. He increased speed for the last halfmile, run in 54sec. Calcutta Sweep may have his next race in the Foxton Cup. Fleur (R. Hanlin) and Dart Away (N. Hoy) were companions over six furlongs, run in Imin 22 1-ssec. They recorded 53 l-ssec for the last halfmile.

Smuggles (R. McDonald) recorded 52 l-ssec for half a mile, a smart sprint after a slow first furlong. Sun House (J. L. Coulter), the likely favourite for the Chatmos Hack Handicap at Ashburton, sprinted thre? furlongs in 38sec. She needs little fast work to keep her at her best, and appeared to thrive on her campaign at Riccarton, where she won two of the distance hack races.
