CREPELLO WINS MILE CLASSIC
Small Margin In Close Finish (N.Z. Press Association^—Copyright) NEWMARKET, May 1. Crepello, the joint 7 to 2 second favourite, won the Two Thousand Guineas, the first classic of the 1957 season, at Newmarket today. Crepello, a son of Donatello, was badly drawn on the outside of the field. He ran into the lead close to home to win smoothly by half a length, in the hands of Lester Piggott. The 100 to 8 chance, the grey colt. Quorum, ridden by A. J. Russell, was second. In a storming finish Quorum beat the 100 to 30 favourite. Pipe of Peace, by a head. A photo derided the minor placings. Pipe of Peace was ridden by the Australian jockey, S. Breasley. The best of the three French challengers was Tyrone, which, like the winner, started at 7to 2. He finished fourth after holding a prominent place most of the way. The Irish colt, Chevastrid, broke through the barrier in a false start and bolted. He was withdrawn but had come under the starter’s orders, so that his backers lost their money. The Queen and a huge crowd watched the mile classic in glorious summer weather. The going was very firm, resulting in the withdrawal of the French colt, Balbo, and Gaza Time. It was Lester Piggott’s first win in the Two Thousand Guineas. He won the Derby of 1954 on Never Sav Die. Sir Victor Sassoon was successful with Pinza in the Derby the previous year and must now have great hopes again with Crepello, which is looked upon as better suited to the Derby distance than that of -the Guineas.
