SHIP COLLISION IN RAINSTORM
(N.Z Press Association+Copyright) NEW YORK, March 8. A small tanker rammed an anchored cargo ship in rainswept New York harbour tonight crushing a motor launch waiting to take on the cargo ship’s crew. One man aboard the 35ft launch was killed and a second is feared trapped in the wreckage. Had the collision occurred a few minutes later, the launch would have been loaded with men going ashore from the 8070ton Steel Admiral. The 468 ft-long Steel Admiral, owned by the Istahmian Steamship Company, had an Bft hole ripped in her side. The tanker was the Vai T, owned by Merry Queen Transfer Corporation, New York. Her bow was smashed in the collision. The Steel Admiral launched a power lifeboat and towed the motor-launch to shore before it could sink.
