ROWING INTER-CLUB EIGHTS
AVON WINS OPEN CLASS
The annual inter-club eights regatta held at Kerr's Reach on Saturday was the most successful of these fixtures. With six crews entered in the open race and four in the youths’ race, entries were the largest ever received. The standard of rowing showed a marked improvement on previous years. The Canterbury selectors watched the races and, after the final of the open race, announced the names of two crews, which raced later in the afternoon. The names of the rowers chosen for the provincial eights were then announced. The open eights race was won by a well-balanced Avon club crew. This crew won both its heat and the final from the Canterbury club’s crew by a third of a length. In the final Avon took full advantage of the first bend in the course, and with its livelier stroking had a lead of a length and a half when entering the second bend. Canterbury almost overtook Avon 100 yards from the finishing line, but Avon raised its rate or stroking and held the lead. The Timaru club crew was third, four lengths further back. The youths' eights race was won bv the Canterbury club's crew from Avon by five lengths. The Canterbury crew showed excellent form, and was never troubled in winning either the heat or final. Results were:— Open Class.—First heat: Avon 1. Canterbury I 2, Union 3. One-third of a length. Second heat: Timaru 1. Canterbury II 2. Cure (Kaiapoi) 3. Four lengths. Final: Avon (R.
