CORSO APPEAL £70,000 TARGET THIS YEAR

There will still be more than 70,000 Hungarian refugees left in Austria during the first six months of 1957, says a report just received in New Zealand from the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva. • The High Commissioner, whose scheme to resettle all Europe's refugees 'has only two more years to run, thus faces a tremendous additional burden. Last year, when his tremendous efforts had reduced the number of refugees to fewer than 250.000, plans were made for New Zealanders to help him this year, CORSO, New Zealand’s own relief organisation, in its annual 1957 money appeal is asking for a minimim of £70,000. This money will help settle permanently the refugees, and others in need in India, Pakistan. Ceylon, Kenya, Tanganyika, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Greece, the New Hebrides, British Solomons, and the Gilbert and Ellice Islands.

This year the number of refugees has risen to 300,000 again. CORSO’s appeal will open with a national broadcast by the Minister of Health (Mr J. R. Hanan) today, to be followed by other broadcasts, including one by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) this month.
