NORTH ISLAND TOURNEY

British Players Beaten (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, January 3. Two New Zealanders beat overseas players in the North Island tennis tourney today in the men'i singles semi-finals. J. E. Robson beat W. A. Knight (Britain), 6-4, 6-8, 8-6, and R. S. McKenzie beat the British champion, M. G. Davies, 7-5, 6-4. D. V. Shaw (Otago) and Miss R. Morrison (Auckland) had a straight-set victory over Knight and Miss S. Field (Canterbury) in a quarter-final of the mixed doubles. They won, 6-4, 6-2. A. S. Burns and M. A. Otway narrowly failed to beat Knight and Davies in a semi-final of the men’s doubles. The Britons won, 6-4, 3-6, 8-6. Burns and Otway had an early service break in the final set and led 3-1, but Knight and Davies broke Burns’s service. The New Zealanders, after a spell of fine tennis, again broke through, but Knight and Davies smashed and volleyed their way into the lead again. The national finalists of last season, Miss S. Cox (Wellington) and Miss Morrison, will meet in the women’s singles final. Both had straight-set victories in the semifinals. Miss Cox over Mrs H. Robson (Auckland) and Miss Morrison over Miss P. Nettleton (Auckland).

Robson and Otway were pushed to three sets by P. G. Nicholls (Wellington) and R. A. Howe (Australia) in the second semifinal of the men's doubles, winning 8-10, 8-4, 6-4. Results:—

Womens Singles.—Semi-finals. Miss S. Cox (Wellington) beat Mrs H. Robson (Auckland), 6-4. 6-2; Miss R. Morrison (Auckland) beat Miss P. Nettleton (Auckland), 6-4, 6-4.

Women’s Doubles.—Semi - finals: Misses Cox and Morrison beat Miss P. Nelson (Wellington) and Miss R. Dickson (Auckland), 10-8, 6-3; Mrs Robson and Miss Nettleton beat Miss H. Mitchell and Miss B. Paterson (Waikato), 6-1, 6-1.

Men’s Doub.es.—Semi-finals: M. G. Davies and W. A. Knight (Britain) beat A. S. Burns and M. A. Otway (Auckland), 6-4, 3-6, 8-6; Robson and McKenzie beat P. G. Nicholls and R. A. Howe, 8-10, 6-4, 6-4.

Mixed Doubles.—Quarter-finals: D. Shaw (Otago) ana Miss Morrison beat Knight and Miss S. Field (Canterbury), 6-4, 6-2; R. A. Howe (Australia) and Miss D. Taylor (Auckland) beat P. G. Nicholls and Miss Cox, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Boys' Singles.—Semi-finals: G. Edge (Waikato) beat M. Malcolm (Waikato), 6-0, 6-1; A. Chester (Auckland) beat M. Oliver (Waikato), 6-0, 5-7. 6-3.

Gxrls* Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss J. * Glennie (Auckland) beat Miss M. ► Douglas (Waikato), 7-5, 2-6, 6-3; Miss J B. Bryant (Auckland) beat Miss M. * Hatton (Papakura), 9-7, 4-6, 6-4.
