UNIVERSITY MATCH
AUSTRALIANS LOSE TO OTAGO (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 3. The Australian Universities tennis team was beaten by 11 matches to 5 in the first match of its New Zealand tour by Otago University in Auckland todav.
The Australian men failed to win a match, but the Australian women had almost the same superiority the other half of the team lacked. The only Otago woman to win was Miss J. Buxton, who beat Miss J. Hemming in straight sets.
The match was decided in the mixed doubles, and here Otago had four wins.

Men’s Singles.—J. Montgomerie beat C. Callaghan, 6-4, 6-4; D. Lye beat L. Rae, 6-1, 6-4; M. Ellis beat K. Adams. 6-1, 3-6, 6-2; L. Couper beat C. Allen, 6-0, 6-0.
Men’s Doubles.—Montgomerie and Ellis beat Rae and Callaghan, 8-6, .6-3; Lye and Couper beat Adams and Allen, 6-4, 6-3.
Women’s Singles.—Miss S. McEwan lost to Miss B. Bradfield, 3-6. 2-6; Miss B. Cothart lost to Miss J. Decker, 6-4, 1-6, 5-7; Miss J. Buxton beat Miss J. Hemming, 6-1, 6-2; Miss J. Blundell lost to Miss A. Emslie. 6-3, 6-3.
Women’s Doubles.—Misses McEwan and Colthart lost to Misses Bradfield and Decker, 1-6, 4-6; Misses Buxton and Blundell lost to Misses Hemming and Emslie, 1-6, 3-6. Mixed Doubles.—Montgomerie and Miss McEwan beat Callaghan and Miss Emslie, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; Lye and Miss Colthart beat Adams and Miss Decker, 6-4, 8-6; Ellis and Miss Buxton beat Rae and Miss Hemming, 6- 5-7, 6-4; Couper and Miss Blundell beat Allen and Miss Bradfield, 7- 0-6, 7-5.
