Glint Has Compiled Outstanding Record

Glint gained her most important success to date and brought her stake-earnings to £5330 when she outclassed her field in the Ashburton Trotting Cup on Wednesday. She achieved her success with a minimum of effort after being in a trailing position behind the pacemaker all the way. Once she was pulled out about the furlong post, she settled the issue in a few strides. It was a most impressive effort by the Whipster mare. She was having only her second attempt over two miles, the other being last autumn when she failed at Addington. At the time she was well below her best. Glint has not yet come to the end of her winning run and more will be heard of this speedy mare before the end of the season. She will be meeting much sterner opposition from now on, but this should not prevent her winning several races. On Wednesday she was driven by M. Holmes, who has been associated with her in most of her races. She races most kindly and generously for Holmes and the combination should win another major prize in the autumn. Glint is raced on lease by her trainer, R. H. Negus, and she is the first horse he has raced. However, he has acquired a number of horses in recent months and has a good-sized team in work at Springston. Glint is always paraded a mass of condition and her appearance is a credit to her young trainer. She appears to thrive on very little work, and usually* improves with racing. Bred at Tinwald Bred at Tinwald by Mr T. W. Gudsell, who raced her sire. Whipster, Glint is out of Spangle, a useful winner some seasons ago. She was by Nelson Derby from Denver’s Doll, by Denver Huon from Princess Dolly, by Prince Imperial. Mr Gudsell, who has had a long association with trotting, has bred from this family for some years now and it has produced some useful performers. Denver’s Doll left other winners in Drag Harlan, Lazy Bones (the dam of Terrace Lass), Kiwi Lad and Tiki Napu. Princess Dolly left two useful winners in Pluto and Limosa. Whipster was one of the best pacers racing a few years ago and he won his way to the verge of New Zealand Cup class. But for

- recurring soreness, he would have t won many more races. He was by Quite Sure from Bantam and was * bred at Hinds by Miss J. Cuff. ' Whipster has had considerable ’ success in a brief stud career. The F oldest of his progeny are now five j and they include Don Hall, one of * the best three-year-olds of his _ season, Overdrive, Lady Vai and " Prometheus. Since the successes of Don Hall and Glint in particular, t Whipster has been widely patrons ised at the stud. t Glint began racing as a two--2 year-old, failing in the Cantert bury Park Juvenile Stakes. She s then finished third to Pointer and Phantasy in the Invitation Stakes at Geraldine, and foFowed this ujx by beating Pointer by a nose in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes e at Addington. In that race she r paced the mile and a quarter in s 2min 43 l-ssec, two seconds out- „ side Vivanti’s record for a two- ” year-old. At her only other start _ that season sh A was runner-up to n False Step in the Two-year-old Stakes at Methven. s Beat Pointer n e Glint had three placings early last season before she beat Pointer r in the Riccarton Stakes. Then s came probably her greatest effort - of the year when she went under f by a head to the brilliant False s Step in the Derby at Addington, t She actually headed False Step ins side the furlong, but the colt d showed rare courage to get up r and worry her out of first place in o the last stride.

She was unplaced in the Challenge Stakes, but came into her own again in the Oaks when- she won easing up by seven lengths from Lady Wexford after pacing the mile and a half in the race record time of 3min 13 2-ssec. She was eased up after that race and was not at her best for the Addington Easter meeting, although her fourth to Local Light, Tehana and Highland Air in the Wilkin Handicap was a smart effort. Glint was unplaced at her first start this season. She improved with racing, but had to be content with four second placings before she gained her first win at Forbury Park on October 6. She won again on the same course a week later and then beat Lady Shona in the Final Handicap on New Zealnd Cup day. At her only other start before her Addington success she was fourth in the New Zealand Metropolitan Chai-

lenge Stakes won by False Step. In that race she paced the mile and a quarter in the good time of 2min 36 4.-ssec. Glint's full record is:— I
