TWO KILLED IN COLLISION

Six Injured, Some Seriously

CARS MEET HEAD ON (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 25. Two persons were killed and six others were injured, some seriously, when two cars met head on about four miles north of Feilding bn the Feilding-Halcombe highway about 9.40 p.m. yesterday. It is not known in which cars the various persons were travelling, but it is understood two were in a car travelling north from Feilding and six in the other car.

Those killed were: Mr W. A. Newton, of 12 High street. Carterton; and John Robert Gyde, who lived with Mr J. D. Malcolm, Te Rapa.

Those injured are: Marjorie June Hunt, aged 18, of 35 Kawa Kawa street, Wanganui, whose condition is reported to be fairly comfortable;

Nelson Frederick Thorn, aged 21, of 54 Denbigh street, Feilding, reported to be fairly comfortable; His younger brother, Peter Thorn, of the same address, condition fair; Kerry Newton, a son of Mr W. A. Newton, and of the same address, fairly comfortable; Gordon Waters, aged 19, of Nixon street, Wanganui, who received medical treatment and was discharged; Another man, aged 23, was admitted to hospital, where his condition is satisfactory. His name is not available, as his next-of-kin have not been notified.

Other travellers gave valuable assistance in getting the injured persons from the cars. Ambulances from Feilding and Palmerston North took the injured to the Palmerston North Public Hospital. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.

82 YEAR-OLD WOMAN KILLED CAR STRIKES TELEPHONE POLE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 25. An elderly woman was killed today when the car in which her son was driving her to his home for Christmas dinner struck a telephone pole at the intersection of Hillsborough and Belfast roads, Hillsborough. She was: Emily Kelly, aged 82, of 239 Great South road, Auckland.

The driver, Bernard Harold Kelly, of 236 Hillsborough road, was admitted to the Auckland Public Hospital with concussion. A grand-daughter, Elizabeth Kelly, aged 10, was treated for shock, but was able to return home.

Three other passengers in the car escaped injury.

WALKED INTO MOVING TRAIN 70-YEAR-OLD MAN KILLED (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 25. A 70-year-old resident of Palmerston North who walked into a moving goods train on a level crossing in Palmerston North yesterday afternoon was killed instantly. He was Thomas Patrick Drury, who lived at the Pacific Boarding House, Cuba street.

Mr Drury suffered extensive head injuries, and his body was carried 70ft past the crossing.

The accident occurred at 3.20 p.m. It has been stated that the warning lights were operating, and the diesel engine drawing the train sounded its whistle at the approach to the level crossing at Princess and Main streets.

FALL WHEN RIDING MOTORSCOOTER WOMAN FATALLY INJURED (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 25. A woman who was admitted to the Gore Public Hospital yesterday afternoon with severe injuries suffered when she fell from her motor-scooter, died early this morning. She was Joyce Constance Loveday Robertson, a 28-year-old domestic, whose address is care of A. J. Millar, of Vidston street, Outram. She fell while descending the Conical Hills, on the Waipahi-Tapanui main highway, and was found unconscious by a passing motorist.

CHILD FALLS FROM PIER

RESCUE BY JUNIOR LIFESAVER

A junior member of the Waimairi Surf Life-saving Club, lan Hayes, aged 15, showed presence of mind, courage, and life-saving skill when he rescued a five-year-old girl who fell off the end of the New Brighton pier into the sea on Monday. The girl was fishing with her father, Mr C. Boulden, of 1 Dyers road. Woolston, on the end of the pier at 10 a.m. when she fell in. The tide was high at the time. Hayes, who was fishing on the pier nearby, saw the girl fall, and quickly stripping off his outer clothes, dived off the pier into the sea. He swam to the child, who was sinking slowly after having come to the surface once, and quickly brought her to the beach, where her father was by this time waiting. The girl was quite composed and conscious when brought ashore, and resuscitation was not necessary. The child recovered quickly and was able to go home with her father.

CHILD DROWNED IN TROUGH ON FARM (New Zealand Press Association) ' AUCKLAND. December 25. A 19-months-old girl was drowned at her.parents’ farm at Galatea, southeast of Rotorua, about 7 p.m. yesterday. She was Barbara Anne Bennett, daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Bennett, of Galatea. She had been playing outside the milking shed while her mother was milking. She was found face downward in a small trough with about one foot of water in it
