POLICE CALLED TO CHURCH

Man “Enveloped In Cloud Of Smoke”

BOYS’ EXPERIMENT WITH CHEMICALS

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 25.

Reports that a man had been burned and “enveloped in a cloud of smoke” sent Wellington police officers hurrying to the Roman Catholic Church at Karori today to investigate. Police inquiries showed that the incident was an outcome of two Karori boys experimenting with chemicals, presumably to manufacture explosives. A parishioner on her way to church this morning noticed that a red liquid had been spread throughout the church grounds. When this liquid dried it become explosive on touch. One man had bent down to investigate the substance. A flash had occurred, and this was how the “cloud of smoke” report had originated. The man was slightly burnt, and his eyebrows were singed. Police investigations soon showed that those responsible were two Karori schoolboys. By 11.30 a.m. today the substance had been removed by the boys themselves. Wellington detectives tonight said the boys had been sent home to their parents. The detectives did not know what had happened on their arrival home.
