LAWN TENNIS JUNIOR TOURNEY
FINALS PLAYED AT WILDING PARK
G. JUDGE WINS BOYS’ SINGLES
Finals were played in all grades except the under 18 mixed doubles, on the third day of the sponsored junior lawn tennis tournament at. Wilding Park yesterday. The mixed doubles will be completed within the next few days.
The play was still of a high standard, but foot faults were common among the younger, players. C. G. Judge won the under 18 boys’ singles by beating R. W. Harris. 6-5. 6-3, in the final. Judge, who won this grade last year, was the steadier of the tw’o. Although Harris scored with some good passing shots off his backhand, he made errors in some of his other backhand shots. The match between L. Mardon and K. Brander for the final of the under 18 girls' singles was very even. Mardon beat Brander, who did not settle down in the first set, 6-1, 4-6. 6-4.
Best in the under 15 boys’ grade was B. Judge. Playing aggressive tennis. Judge was not fully extended in any of his singles matches. He beat J. Logie in the final, 6-2, 6-4. D. Jamieson and G. Moss won the under 18 boys’ doubles from L. Walpole and C. G. Judge. Jamieson and Moss settled down after the first set. Moss scored frequently with good volleys and smashes.
The young Rangiora player, I>. Watkins, who is on the under 17 ladder, won the under 13 boys’ singles. Watkins, who won this grade for the second year in succession, beat M. Thom, 9-5. After the afternoon matches. Mr W. Clothier, chairman of the management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, presented trophies. Results:—
