COLOMBO STREET TRAM RAILS
DISRUPTION OF TRAFFIC DURING LIFTING
Lifting of tram rails in Colombo street will start next month. The job will take between three and four months to complete. While the work is in progress some disruption of traffic is expected.
Commenting on the announcement of the works committee of the Christchurch City Council that the reconstruction of the middle strip of Colombo street from Moorhouse avenue to Hereford street would start next month the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) said that 20 feet of the 46-foot roadway would be lifted. In addition the firm handling the job, British Pavements, Ltd., would have equipment parked at the kerbsides. “The job will certainly disrupt traffic, /but final arrangements have not yet been made,” said Mr Somers. “It had been decided to carry out the work early in the New Year when traffic generally was not so heavy.”
