AWARD OF POLAR MEDAL
PRESENTATION BY DUKE OF EDINBURGH A former Christchurch man, Mr Bruce Harry Stinear, received the Polar Medal from the Duke of Edinburgh in Melbourne early this month. A geologist, Mr Stinear was a member of the small team of explorers which during 1944-45 established Australia’s Mawson base on the Antarctic Continent. He is now on his way to the Antarctic again in the Kista Dan.
Mr Stinear was a navigator with the Royal New Zealand Air Force during World War 11. Afterwards he resumed his appointment with the Vacuum Oil Company and was engaged in oil prospecting in Taranaki. Australia, and New Guinea. When he returned from the Antarctic in March last year, he again resumed oil prospecting.
The Polar Medal was presented to him at an investiture held in Melbourne on December 3, after an Antarctic symposium conducted by the Royal Society and attended by the Duke of Edinburgh. Among those present were the distinguished Antarctic explorers, Sir Douglas Mawson, Captain John King Davis, and Sir Raymond Priestley.
