Progress On Haast Pass Route

(New Zealana Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 20. Construction of the Haast Pass road the first direct motor link between Otago and the Jackson’s Bay area in South Westland, 203 miles south of Hokitika, will be completed “in a year or so,” said the district commissioner of works in Dunedin (Mr F. D. Grant) today. Mr Grant has just returned from an inspection *our of the route. Steady progress is ber.g made with the construction of the road between Wanaka and Haast, and the first mile to the gates of the Haast bridge site is completed for the greater part, he said A Bailey bridge has been erected across the Haast river near the permanent bridge site, and this will remain in service for some years. The most urgent task in the area said Mr Grant, was the erection of the Pleasant Flat bridge back over the Haast river and about three miles past the gates of Haast bridge.
